First Ocean Sampling Day Consortium meeting at GSC16/GOs4

On March 31 to April 2, 2014, the 16th Workshop of the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) took place at Oxford University, UK. The main theme of the GSC16 was Biodiversity Genomics addressing the large efforts to  sequence as much of the  biodiversity on Earth as possible. In focus were species (notably humans and other model organisms, or species of economic or ecological significance) and particular places and environments.  These studies, whether at the organismal or ecosystem scale, increasingly address changes over time.  There is much overlap among these projects with an urgent need to establish common data standards as well as an opportunity to share lessons learned (e.g., biobanking, data policies, technological approaches, informatics platforms, theory and modeling etc.).

GSC16 also served as the fourth meeting of the Genomic Observatories Network (GOs4) and the first international meeting of the Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) Consortium. The GOs Network aims to help expand the scope of OSD to include new geographies, sampling approaches, taxa and environments, and to maintain this action beyond 2014.

The OSD and GOs breakout session provided a great platform to update and introduce the workflow for the main OSD event on June 21st, 2014. Furthermore we were very pleased to introduce the Access & Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Helpdesk Team in order to support OSD participants in obtaining the necessary legal permits to undertake research in different maritime zones and to transfer research materials to another country. Highlights of this meeting were the flash talks from participating OSD sites addressing the topic ‘lesson learned, vision for the future’. It was a pleasure to listen to inspiring talks about different sampling sites across the globe and discuss the future of OSD in the panel discussion. It was an amazing opportunity to connect curious minds that care about the health of our oceans allowing new visions for OSD beyond 2014 to emerge. In this spirit we would like to thank all participants who joined us for this fruitful GSC16/GOs4 meeting in Oxford making this workshop a great success.

OSD is what we make of it…
