The potential for marine biotechnology is almost infinite

Today on 12. November 2012 scientists are meeting in Paris to discuss how to harness newly discovered microbial life in the seas. The biotechnology forum is called The Evolving Promise of the Life Sciences and is run by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) genomics forum.

"Chameleon" cyanobacteria

Ocean is for the flora it shelters a particularly variable environment from the viewpoint of its optical properties: coastal waters are green, whereas offshore waters are more bluish... Additionally, all wavelengths of solar spectrum do not penetrate equally at depth: ultraviolet radiations and red light are absorbed already in the first few meters, then yellow, purple and green disappear at their turn, leaving only blue photons at the bottom of the lit layer. What are the consequences for the phytoplankton which draws its energy from sun?

Biomarine Think Tanks embrace 'omics input

On 24 and 25 October the international BioMarine Business Convention was held in London with 150 high level attendees from Europe, USA and Canada. Six think tanks, on marine biotech topics including aquaculture constituted core activities and were held in three parallel sessions on both days. Two representatives of the Micro B3 coordination team provided input as moderators and session leaders.
