  • Micro B3 Banner Biotechnology

    The third Micro B3 Banner "Decoding Marine (Meta)Genomics for Biotechnology" was shown for the first time at the Industry Expert Workshop in Groningen, the Netherlands, October 14-15 2013. It was designed by Saskia Wesnigk, EMPA Brighton and Damian Steel, Graphic Designer at www.SussexSigns.com, based on ideas by Johanna Wesnigk, Fergal O’Gara, Dick Janssen and others.

    The second Micro B3 Banner "Life on Earth evolved from the Oceans" was shown for the first time at the EEB meeting in Bremen May 6-8 2013 and then at the EMBO Diatom workshop. It was designed by Saskia Wesnigk, EMPA Brighton and Chris Boseley, Senior Graphic Designer, www.SussexSigns.com, based on ideas by Chris Bowler, Johanna Wesnigk, Frank Oliver Glöckner, with input from Josep Gasol, Renzo Kottmann and others.

  • Short Aquafeed Article on Results of the High-Level Think Tank on Environmental Biotechnology

    The think tank made recommendations on the use of beneficial marine microbes, as well as the human resources and infrastructures needed for SMEs and large industry to benefit from marine data.
    Several recommendations were developed, among them how to make especially young scientists more aware of market interests and pressures. In order to mould the thinking of a next generation of scientists in a more entrepreneurial way, their training and education should encompass business-relevant skills. Another key point is the necessary efficient up-scaling of production. Finally it was suggested that easy-to-understand messages on promising marine and environmental biotech options will create a positive image for products ‘from the sea’.

  • Micro B3 leads two think tanks at BioMarine 2012

    The international BioMarine Business Convention which was held in London (24-25 October 2012) with 150 high level attendees from Europe, USA and Canada included six think tanks on marine biotech topics. Two representatives of the Micro B3 coordination team provided input as moderators and session leaders for two of these. For the think tank focusing on marine biotech for health applications, Frank Oliver Glöckner led the discussions on the optimum use of libraries and culture collections for medical and pharmaceutical uses. Johanna Wesnigk chaired a group with cluster representatives focussing on the role of public private partnerships and technological centres to bring industry academia collaboration forward to promote marine bio-actives to "big pharma". Johanna Wesnigk also moderated the think tank on marine biotech for the environment, which developed several recommendations in two parallel groups. The think tank on industry needs was chaired by Frank Oliver Glöckner and the one on scientific output, i.e. using the new 'Omics techniques to speed up generation of proteins and enzymes harnessing knowledge of natural cycles, evolution and selection, was led by Meredith Lloyd-Evans.
